Why Adverts

We all have bills to pay, and Paying the Rent is one of them. Showing a few ads lets us offer this app for free. We want this benefit to be available to everyone.
From a Buddhist perspective, you 'Make Causes', these are like Karmic Seeds which yield benefits/victories. Just using this app will yield benefits as your Daimoku is never wasted. The difference is in using this App you are clearly Many in Body and One in Mind, this is then focused on your common victories to realize Actual Proof.

Why would it ask for my location?

The app will now and again ask for your location from amy source it can find, this is so your Daimoku is recorded in your location, the correct country and nearest city. It does this so you dont have to. If you want to set your location for there is a set now button.
[...]

Daimoku Time

All Daimoku is stored corrected back to UTC/GMT no matter where you are. Your current location is an offset to this. This time takes into account any Day Light Saving/Summer Time off sets. Which means the ceromony in the air, transcends both space and time, it is just 'now' where ever you are. This is stored in the time server at Eagle Peak. You join in with Daimoku with others in a different time zone you would need to chant when they do. You can see them joining your daimoku. Equally you can join later and keep the Daimoku going taking over from them during this Tozo/Toso.
[...]

Daimoku Speed

People all chant at different speed, at one end it might be 35 ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’s in a minute, just speaking it now, took one second, so 60 in a minute, so at that rate each hour would equate to 3600 Daimoku. However some people can chant at 110 Daimoku per minute (not me thats for sure) so 6600 per hour. Some might argue about enunciation and are you actually saying ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’ or squashing together so you can super fast is ok because its the intent behind the Daimoku that matters. It’s your Daimoku, your choose. The speed setting does matter is the energy of the collective Daimoku on CFoD as a whole, otherwise its just between you and your gohonzon.

What is the "Are You Still There" message?

When you start the timer It will assume that you are doing a normal morning or evening Gongyo which is normally less than 60mins. It will display a message much like "You must have stepped away so we turned off your daimoku stream @ {hh:mm}. Let us know when you are ready to start chanting again"
At this message it will have assumed you have stopped and will take a snap-shop of your Daimoku recording it. If you press the continue button the time will continue (for another 60mins) and the total time will added, so no daimoku is lost. If you never press the continue button [I’M STILL CHANTING] or close the window, the time that it was triggered, is the point when the daimoku ended.
When might this happen?
Daimoku Marathons - One or more people chanting for a cause possible upto 3 hours. Such determination brings big results.
Daimoku Brunch - One or more people chanting for a cause, but with buffet food (cooked breakfast or soups) where there is always someone chanting infront of the Gohonzon, and people take turns going to the kitchen to have a meal.
Caution: All too often people prefer to chat in the kitchen next to the food, and the person infront of the Gohonzon is forgotten. Dont forget what you are there for. It is not a party the power & efficacy is the number of people of one mind in front of the Gohonzon not the number in the kitchen eating cake.

Two Factor Authentication

At CFoD, we take account security very seriously. Here is how to make it hard for your CFoD account to fall into wrong hands.
Two Factor Authentication (TFA) is an additional level of security that can be applied to your CFoD account. With TFA enabled on your account, anyone attempting to login to your CFoD account from an unrecognized computer must provide additional authorization. You can activate TFA to send you a uniquely generated verification code to your phone either as a voice call or as an SMS text or you can use the Google Authenticator app on your iPhone or Android smart phone or Laptop to generate codes, and this code must be entered into your CFoD account before your login is complete.
Good Authentication involves something you know (your password), something you have (your phone), and something you are (your fingerprint)

Causes

These vary, we all have diffent goals, personal one like chanting for a new job, to over come Money Karma through to group based ones such as growth in the district, or for Kosen Rufu. These are either done on your own, in Tozos, Daimoku Marathons.

Cafe/Cocktail Deafness

This is not actual Deafness in the sense of a loss of hearing, as people with this condition have a hearing tests just as good as teenagers. This condition is based on continuous development of the brains function in 'hearing' from a baby to old age, sadly it does not stop when the system is fully developed (tho of course this is a good thing in the case of cochlear ear implants). The net effect is that in an environment of many people talking (chanting) you cannot "tune into" a single voice and "tune out" all others, which makes it hard to concentrate (hence why so many people use ear-phones in a open plan office to concentrate). This means that when doing Gongyo in a group hearing someone else doing a different gongyo to you will trip you up.
[...]

Resynchronization Points

In time you will have learnt Gongyo well enough. But if you have joined a meeting and Gongyo has started, you need to quickly find where they are whilst they are chanting and continue in unison. There are other times where, where you were 'tripped up' and you have to jump ahead to where they are now. Its up to you where these anchors are to resynchronize to, the obvious ones are the start of each chapter, then the repeated sections such as 'Nyo ze..',or 'hoben chicken'.

Why International English?

As much as I would love to pretend its British English this site aims to use American English as MTV and Hollywood have taken their tole.

Why is my location is wrong?

This App find your location by various means. CFOD really is only interested in which county and time zone your are in. You local time is adjusted to UTC/GMT for the calculation of the flow, where 'now' is the same from the point of view of the Ceremony in the Air, but 7pm is different around the world. This App will try and determine your location, from your GPS service if switched on, through to where you 4G provider gets their Internet from. As an example whilst I maybe in the city of Brighton, the 4G tower near me, has cables running back to head office located in Wandsworth,London 60 miles away, this is not uncommon. So if you want to pin your daimoku to your district, you need to set the default information of your home location(city).

When I tap on the Menu icon in the top Right Hand Side (RHS) corner of the screen there are additional icons on in the middle of the screen, what do they mean?

Buddhism

These are top level questions, they avoid being to specific to one branch or another, are the goal of CFOD is unites us not what devides us.

  • Life as a Nichiren Buddhist
  • Daimoku
    Chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo
  • Nichiren
Nichiren (16 February 1222 - 13 October 1282), born as Zennichimaro, was a Japanese Buddhist priest who lived during the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333). Nichiren is known for his sole devotion to the Lotus Sutra, asserting that it was Shakyamuni Buddha's ultimate teachings and was the exclusive method to attain enlightenment. Nichiren believed that the Lotus Sutra contained the essence of all of Shakyamuni Buddha's teachings related to the laws of causality, karma, without any distinction to enlightenment. His interpretation of the Lotus Sutra centers on the emphasis of its 16th chapter, The Life Span of the Thus Come One, where he grounds his revelation that the chanting of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is the superior practice of Mappo or today's age.
    [...]

  • Nichiren Buddhism
Nichiren Buddhism is a Japanese Buddhist movement in the Mahayana tradition. It is also popular in the West and has a fast growing membership in the UK.
Nichiren Buddhism differs from other schools of Buddhism in focusing on this world, and in its view that it is the only correct tradition. It also emphasizes the importance of individuals taking responsibility for improving themselves.
Although it can be seen as a highly self-focused religion, followers of Nichiren Buddhism believe that individual empowerment and inner transformation contribute, in turn, to a better and more peaceful world.

  • Tozo/Toso
A meeting dedicated to chanting together usually deadicated to a cause. Toso is written using two Japanese characters: ? representing evil spirits and ? meaning to defeat. Thus a Toso is usually a regular meeting to defeat a problem, from Money Karma or for growth in your district or just Kosen Rufu.
Domei is like a tozo, but with everyone chanting from their own houses as the same time - this is when you would use this app.

  • What is Kosen Rufu? “For the members of the SGI, kosen-rufu means the ceaseless effort to enhance the value of human dignity, to awaken all people to a sense of their limitless worth and potential.” It feels impossible for one person to awaken ALL people to their limitless worth and potential, but you can influence the people around you, one person at a time. This is part of a Buddhists vow they made countless life times ago (see Bodhisattva), they promised that they would not enter nivana until every one else could (this veries between all the buddhist traditions).
    [...]

  • What is Human Revolution? As part of our practise, we focus on Human Revolution/Evolution which is about transforming ourselves and our circumstances.
In his writing On Attaining Buddhahood, Nichiren Daishonin conveys the basic spirit of Human Revolution: "You must never think that any of the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Shakyamuni's lifetime or any of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are outside yourself. Your practice of the Buddhist teachings will not relieve you of the sufferings of birth and death in the least unless you perceive the true nature of your own life."
We could summarise the spirit of this teaching as being, "It's not up to others; nor can I blame anyone else. I have to change myself first." It is a viewpoint that says, everything in life is part of our own training; it is for our benefit and development. Human Revolution takes place right now, in the situation we find ourselves at this moment.
World peace starts with this inner transformation of the individual. And yes it is a struggle to develop and elevate our state of life but Human Revolution is the foundation for world peace and also for individual peace and happiness. It is at the heart of our Buddhist practice. It is about changing our heart and drawing out our humanity.

  • What is Esho funi - esho funi nini funi, or "two but not two, not two but two". It basically describes the oneness of life and environment that leads to fundamental Buddhist compassion.

  • What is Sansho Shima - San Sho Shi Ma or Negativity aka The Three Obstacles and Four Devils. Our lives seem to contain an innate resistance to change that is at least as strong as our desire to improve ourselves. In Buddhism, such resistance is characterized as "obstacles" and "devilish functions," which are a natural part of the dynamic workings of our lives. These seem to manifest as equal and opposing forces to "attaining Buddhahood" and our Human Revolution. As hard as we try to make good happen, something will get in the way to stop us. The harder we try the bigger the obstructions - this can be disheartening, but it also foretells of a great victory, it is a clue that you are on the right track. [...]

  • What is a Bodhisattva bodhisattva is the Sanskrit term for anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
    [...]

  • Butsudan - literally "the house of the Buddha" is a (more or less) small wooden case used to protect the Gohonzon. It's the only item of the Butsugu you have to have if you want to receive Gohonzon.
    [...]

  • Butsugu - Is all the stuff you put around your Butsudan, which may include such as candlesticks, incense burners, bells, and platforms for placing offerings such as fruit, tea or rice. The Butsudan is kept in the Butsuma or a part of your home set aside for your practice.

  • Butsuma - It doesn't have to be a special separate room, although of course it's every buddhist's dream to have a dedicated Butsuma at home. If you are lucky enough to have a Buddhist centre near you, then it will have a Butsuma big enough for every one.

  • Ichinen - Is usually used to indicate your unstoppable determination endowed with the wisdom of the Buddha. Also see Determinations
    [...]

  • San-sho-shima - Its short meaning is 'obstacles', but there is more to it than that, it seems directly proportional to the ichinen you have for something. But knowing it will happen is to be forewarned and the greater the eventual victory.

  • Itai doshin - "many in body, one in mind". A type of unity that is not a mechanical uniformity, imposed or coerced from without. Rather, it is unity that has at its heart respect for the diverse and unique qualities of each individual ("many in body"). Such unity arises, when people "treasure each other as unique and irreplaceable individuals, and try to bring out the best in each other."

  • Countless lifetimes - This is code for never. In some traditions, born as a woman you can never reach enlightenment. After that you need to wait a long time, typically 4,320,000 human years; kalpas is another term for close to eternity.

The “Teacher of the Law” chapter says:
“If you make offerings to the priest who preaches the Lotus Sutra and hear its teachings for even a moment, then you will experience joy because you can gain even greater benefits than one who offers immeasurable treasures to the Buddha for the space of eighty million kalpas.

    1,000 + 100 + 100 = 1,200 divine years (= 432,000 human years) = 1 Kali Yuga.
    12,000 divine year = 4 Yugas
    (= 4,320,000 human years) = 1 Mah?-Yuga
(also is equaled to 12000 Daiva (divine) Yuga)

  • The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra - In a Nutshell, this means if there is a problem challenge that we face, we need to always chant about it first before we take action. This is contrary to how we are normally taught to address problems using classic problem solving techniques. As previously mentioned this practice transcends both space and time. So you chant from a position of victory and expressing gratitude for that victor - not pleading for a victory. It is said that when you are chanting daimoku you are connected to your Buddha-nature, and your Buddha-wisdom is revealed. The Mystic Law is the ultimate Law of the life and the entire universe. For this reason, when one’s life is connected to the Mystic Law through one’s profound faith, the immense potential and power that exist in the depths of one’s life is unleashed. So with this CFOD app, we could have a 'Task', 'Goals' or 'Determinations' section, which might be seen as a To-Do list, which is not how this practice works; the Mystic Law will figure out the best way to get you what you want.
The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra [...]
The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra - Offer Prayers Based on the Conviction for Absolute Victory [...]

  • Action Teams - In contrast to The Strategy of the Lotus Sutra this is when you are organizing an event, such as a Gosho-Study evening or District Discussion meeting. Prayer will not book a venue, arrange speakers and distribute fliers about the event. The other part of this Buddhism, unlike other traditions, is the wisdom in taking action. So for most part, Teams are faith based, but still do planning and doing Daimoku together is for success. As you do Daimoku together, you are united (many in body, one in mind).

  • Determinations - Is usually used to indicate your unstoppable determination endowed with the wisdom of the Buddha. You may see phrases such as Summoning up the Determination to xxx where xxx is some goal/victory. This goal is not something like just fining a parking space, but something that challenges you and tends to be transfornative or life changing that often is part of your Human Revolution - a process of bringing forth our full human potential. Determinations are characterised as statements from the view point of victory, unlike pleading to a god, we 'pray' from a view point of gratitiude.
