The software that supports it (the software alone, cost to enable this to be built cost $2,787 USD/year/person, then there is the fees from Apple for the App to be merely available on an iPhone(free or otherwise), the servers that host it, the Internet usage charges that communicate it, maintaining the content on the website and App, when we could be doing something else.
I hope there is a balance of fairness, either advertises pay for the rent or the users of this App do or a mix. From a Buddhist perspective, you 'Make Causes', these are like Karmic Seeds which yield benefits that lead to victories. Just using this App will yield benefits as your Daimoku is never wasted. The difference is in using this App and the back-end services around the world that make it possible, you are clearly Many in Body and One in Mind, this is then focused on your common victories to realize Actual Proof.

In 2010, Tim Duncan and myself considered the possibility that of the millions of SGI members around the world; somebody somewhere much be chanting right now, but how do you know? Fewer than 2% of App users worldwide choose to support the development of Apps, because the Internet is Free right!
This is awkward to admit, but I have to be honest: 98% of users don't give; they simply look the other way when we ask for an annual donation or a subscription, even reaching for your wallet is friction, even using Google Pay needs you to recall your CVC number. We choose not to charge a subscription fee, but that doesn't mean we don't need support from our users. We don't send a fund-raising email every month. We respectfully ask for just one donation this year so that CFOD may continue to move forward and create value to the world.

We are non-profit

That means we aren't selling the this service that millions of people may use each day, if something is free then usually its YOU that is the product and your data that is being sold. We don't profit from you, but the cloud, the servers, the power, the cooling and the rent all costs money. In fact, we firmly believe that Kosen Rufu should exist outside of the realm of supply and demand, that Daimoku matters, that your Daimoku Matters. That's hardly a given nowadays; so much of the world's digital estate is driven by profit - nothing is free. It's people like you who safeguard our non-profit mission, who believe in Kosen Rufu and share the dream of what if a would was bathed in a Ceaseless Flow of Daimoku, would it make a difference?
This cause is not funded by a Kosen Rufu or SGI but by our mission by us and whilst many member contribute to the Kosen Rufu fund, my mission is to keep this cause going till November 18, 2030. My faith is that you do to, that Kosen Rufu matters to you, my faith is that Daimoku matters, that we can make this world a better place, and empowered Bodhisattva of the Earth can do it.
