About Us

In: AboutUs, StewardshipFirst, Daimoku, CFOD, Privacy, Trust

CFOD exists to protect a simple human truth: you are not chanting alone.

With over 7 billion people on earth somebody, somewhere right now must be chanting Daimoku right! But how do you know?
This project makes that feeling real—by showing a calm, honest, real-time relay of Daimoku across time zones, so the flow can continue and handovers can happen naturally.

CFOD is designed as a quiet “lane” you can step into without pressure. No fake people. No “robot chanting” in the background. If the counter says one person is chanting, and that person is you—then it’s real. Your Daimoku matters.

A quiet relay for real people

A relay only works when the handover is safe. In software, “safe” isn’t just security—it’s trust, consent, privacy, calm design, and reliability over time.

That is why CFOD is built with Stewardship First.

How this started

The idea for CFOD started with a discussion with Tim Duncan, then he wanted to create a daimoku chain using an Excel spreadsheet for his local district, then thought there must be a better way.
The spark came at Taplow Court (UK), November 2015, during a Men’s Division course. At the end of the course, we all had to make a personal determination, I shared mine to make an App to show that you could have an unbroken wave of daimoku. I left with a clear sense that encouragement can be made practical—something you can join, not just admire. I wanted to show that somebody, somewhere must be chanting right now but how do you know? Would it matter? Could we super-charge kosen-rufu?

In 2019, the first mobile version shipped as an APK. Then the development platform it relied on was cancelled—so the project had to be rebuilt from the ground up, again, lost my job and access to tech, another big challenge. There were many challenges along the way, many false starts, and many moments of doubt - sanshō-shima all the way.
That experience shaped the biggest lesson of all:
Continuity is not a nice-to-have. It’s the point.

The Ceaseless Flow of Daimoku Campaign is Advancing Toward 2030: The 100th Anniversary of the Soka Gakkai
So my mission is working towards 2030, to have many Soka Gakkai member chanting as one, in a constant flow of daimoku for indestructible foundation for lasting world peace and the brilliant flowering of humanity.

This application lets you chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo with other around the world in perfect synchronization. You do not have to wait to begin on the hour, as there is no robot in the background pretending to chant with you, there is no pretend people, if there is only one person chanting, then that is you - this is all in Real Time, your Daimoku matters. When you join the application will tell you how many people are chanting with you and where; whilst maintaining your Privacy at all times. Ceaseless Flow of Daimoku was originally on an Excel Spreadsheet, with people having staggered chanting slots, but there is always bed time, and it was up to district leaders to maintain. So if you imagine joining the ' the ceremony in the air ' is in the cloud on the Internet so when people join this, in real time, down to 1 hundredth of a second you know if someone has joined the flow, a bit like a pass the baton race, you can trip and fall and the flow is broken - so the baton of the flow can be picked up but someone somewhere else, or you could be the only person on the planet that is chanting and if you stop there is science or you can wait a little bit longer and pass on the baton.

I imagined what it might be like for 1,000,000 people to be chanting Daimoku together in the ceremony in the air, and to determined to see that to happen.

CFoD is about what unites us than that which divides us, it’s about victory in our lives, improving ourselves, our human revolution/evolution, becoming one within the Ceremony in the Air, with all the other Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; supporting unity among votaries of the Lotus Sutra.

The fact that the ceremony takes place in the air signifies that it transcends the framework of time and space.

Nichiren Buddhism, unlike some others seeks to reveal the innate Buddhahood within, this can be a challenge for many to believe if you think that The Buddha is on a fluffy cloud somewhere, whereas others realize that The Buddha was once an ordinary person like you or I. So the Buddhahood in Nichiren Buddhism is not the same as one that could be achieved in countless Yugas/Kalpa/Aeons [...]
The feature of waiting countless Aeons is that it is never going to happen in this lifetime. Nichiren Buddhism, is about your life in the here and now

In The True Aspect of all Phenomena', Nichiren Daishonin writes:
Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase. (WND-1, p. 386)

About Me

I have been a buddhist since I was a teenager, but made this determination at a Mens Division Course at Taplow Court UK November 2015, to show that Somebody somewhere must be chanting right now some where in the world. Then what if there was always daimoku, would it make a difference, can we super-charge kosen-rufu? I have been developing software since 1977, so thought how hard can this be? Little did I know, any endeavor within this Buddhism you will discover equal and opposite opposing forces (those devilish functions) that block you at every turn. The mobile App (APK) came out 2019 then the development platform got cancelled, so had to start again.
My story is about the making of CFOD.

“… bodhisattva’s, who, though qualified to receive the pure rewards of Buddhist practice, relinquish them and make a vow to be reborn in an impure world in order to save living beings. They spread the Mystic Law, while undergoing the same sufferings as those born in the evil world due to karma…… (they did this) because they pity living beings, they are born in this evil world so they may broadly expound this sutra.” (LSCOC, p.200)

Stewardship first

Stewardship is how we keep this space worthy of practice. It means: boring reliability overhype, calm defaults over noisy prompts, privacy and consent over surveillance, and transparency over marketing fog.

If you want to see what this looks like in practice, these pages explain it plainly:

Our Hearts Values

  • Stewardship First — protect continuity, reliability, and trust before chasing growth.
  • Honesty — the courage to be open and true (clear pages, clear choices, no hidden incentives).
  • Ethical — natural decency; no manipulation, no pressure loops, no dark patterns.
  • Accessible — approachable and welcoming; nobody should feel “behind” or unsafe to participate.
  • Transformational - Creating and inspirational space to be creative and reach your full potential
  • Real - Seijaku (Se-ja-ku) is a japanese aesthetic meaning 'tranquility in the midst of activity'. A calm state of mind in a busy life, human design that respects attention. We often feel overwhelmed with everything life throws at us. Seijaku helps us navigate the worries and adapt to a calmer state. Sometimes we need to get out of all the hustle and take a deep breath. If you have ever visited a garden set amid the hustle of a busy city and felt energized, you have experienced the feeling of seijaku. We can find serenity amid the noise of daily life. We can remain centered in the midst of chaos. We can find it by disregarding pointless distractions. Nature wants us to pay attention to authentic ourselves. Seijaku is often described as a state of energized calm. It is a state of mind where you are calm through physical activity or mental activity such as focused Daimoku. Serene Buddha-hood resides within us. https://circle.youthop.com/get-inspired/seijaku-embracing-tranquility-in-life -->

What CFOD is (and is not)

CFOD is a companion tool for people chanting Daimoku toward shared goals—especially those inspired by SGI practice— built to support unity and encouragement without turning into a “growth machine.”

It is not spiritual authority. It is not a recruitment channel. It is not an advertising platform. It is a calm, independent relay tool built to protect continuity.

Disclaimer

CFOD is an independent project. It is not an official SGI product and does not represent SGI or any affiliated organisation. References to Nichiren Buddhism are provided respectfully and for the purpose of explaining the intent of this community tool.
