What “stewardship” means here
If you’ve ever relied on a small online tool—something quiet that helped you show up—and then watched it vanish, you know the feeling.
One day it loads. The next day it’s gone. No warning, no explanation, no way to retrieve what mattered. The internet forgets easily.
Stewardship First is our way of refusing that pattern.
This project is a relay: people chanting (Daimoku), handing over across time zones, keeping a thread of continuity alive.
A relay only works when the handover is safe. And in software, “safe” isn’t only security—it’s trust, consent, privacy,
calm design, and reliability over time.
Stewardship means we treat continuity as a responsibility, not a feature.
It means we build slowly on purpose, so nobody feels pressured, watched, or “behind.”
It means we publish the rules: Integrity, Privacy,
and Retention—so trust stays readable.
Why “growth-first” breaks trust
Many modern products are shaped by a simple equation: more users → more engagement → more data → more revenue.
Even when a team starts with good intentions, incentives can pull the product toward louder prompts, more tracking,
more comparison, and more “stickiness” at any cost.
A practice-support space can’t survive that drift. If the system becomes emotionally loud, it stops being a refuge
and starts being another stressor. If it begins extracting attention, it undermines the very thing it claims to support.
Stewardship First keeps incentives aligned:
no ads (because incentives matter),
consent-based communication,
and calm product decisions that protect the human experience over the metric.
In a chanting relay, the baton handover matters. People don’t join because they want to be ranked.
They join because they want to feel part of something steady—something that continues even when their own day is messy.
So the product must protect dignity across different lives and different capacities:
the dignity of someone who chants five minutes, the dignity of someone who chants two hours,
and the dignity of someone who pauses, disappears for a while, and returns quietly.
A relay doesn’t scold runners for resting. It keeps the lane open.
Stewardship is the discipline of keeping that lane open—safe, honest, welcoming, and calm.
Stewardship shows up in the “boring” decisions
Some of the most important decisions in this project will never look exciting in a marketing screenshot. That’s the point.
Stewardship looks like trust infrastructure: documented behaviour, predictable rollouts, health checks, auditability,
and clear escape hatches.
It’s the boring work that makes the human work safe:
an unsubscribe flow that actually unsubscribes,
retention rules that actually delete or archive when they say they will,
and integrity checks that tell us when something is drifting out of bounds.
If we ever have to choose between a flashy feature and the quiet stability of the relay, we choose stability.
Continuity is care.
Stewardship means “calm by default”
Chanting is often a return to centre. The interface should reflect that.
Calm by default means the chanting screen stays simple, the app doesn’t interrupt practice with commerce,
and notifications are optional—not a pressure system.
We’re not building something that competes with social media.
We’re building something that quietly resists social media’s incentive model.
Stewardship protects privacy without becoming paranoid
Privacy here isn’t a badge. It’s a boundary.
We store the minimum needed to run the relay safely and improve handovers,
and we explain what we keep and why.
Ethical memory is bounded memory:
temporary presence data should fade quickly;
long-lived data should be justified, exportable, and deletable.

Stewardship includes honest money
Money can feel awkward in spiritual-adjacent spaces. But avoiding the topic doesn’t make it disappear—only less honest.
So we choose transparency: we explain costs (Paying the Rent),
we avoid ads and data selling, and we keep the free tier meaningful.
If support exists, it must remain optional, calm, and non-coercive.
Support should feel like protecting continuity—not purchasing belonging.
Stewardship is how we avoid “too much too soon”
When a community tool grows too fast, early users feel overwhelmed and later users feel behind.
The result is anxiety—exactly what a practice-support tool should reduce.
Stewardship-first product design means shipping in phases, rolling out carefully, and keeping prompts rare and respectful.
It means using feature flags so changes land safely, and using cooldowns so the app never nags.
Encouragement is not hype. It’s a steady signal:
“You’re not alone. You can show up quietly. You can come back after a break.”
A well-stewarded system becomes part of a healthy environment—supporting people’s best intentions.
Stewardship is encouragement expressed as design:
calm UI, clear boundaries, predictable behaviour, and respect for consent.
The promise we want to keep
If someone uses this app at 2 a.m.—tired, uncertain, trying to steady themselves—we want the experience to feel calm,
safe, honest, steady, and human. Stewardship First is the discipline of designing for that moment.
Because continuity is care. Infrastructure is care. Privacy is care. Truthfulness is care.
That’s the kind of project worth protecting.
