Attachment in Buddhism

In: Buddhism, Intersection

Attachment, that is the inability to practice or embrace detachment, is viewed as the main obstacle towards a serene and fulfilled life. That is Attachment to stuff, if only I had X I would be happy, a bit problem for billionaires as they compare themselves to others. Here we have two schools of thought that differ between pre-and post Lotus Sutra teachings. - rich buddhisdt

Pre-lotus sutra aka provisional

The classical (pre-lotus sutra/provisional) is more about the source of unhappiness is attachment to stuff. Which includes comparing yourself to Photo-shopped others on social media, to someones else's salary, house or car. This is sweet spot of marketing - how many beauty products have Elixir or Serum in the name, as if Ground Angels Wings really do prevent the fine lines by rejuvenating the skin. In the book Evil by Design: Interaction Design to Lead Us into Temptation It shows how companies make us feel good about doing what they want. Approaching persuasive design from the dark side, this book melds psychology, marketing, and design concepts to show why we’re susceptible to certain persuasive techniques:
Pride use social proof to position your product in line with your visitors’ values, Sloth build a path of least resistance that leads users where you want them to go, Gluttony escalate customers’ commitment and use loss aversion to keep them there, Anger understand the power of metaphysical arguments and anonymity, Envy create a culture of status around your product and feed aspirational desires, Lust turn desire into commitment by using emotion to defeat rational behavior, Greed keep customers engaged by reinforcing the behaviors you desire.
You can now see how you are played by the media that you are 'less than', to keep you always hungry and never satisfied. You will never be good enough, its not possible - that's the whole point.

Detachment

The next step here is to let go - to 'not give a F**k'. We have been conditioned since we have entered the world, and in reality we are all good enough. We have different talents, and even when people tell you that you are awesome, you think they are being sarcastic or they dont know the real you. The Pre-lotus sutra takes the view that this world is an illusion (like in the movie The Matrix), so given its fake, and not real, then why not dream another? Its very common, normal for us to have 'Triggers' something happens and we react, the one we all know is the Amygdala Hijack where your body takes action without any conscious input from you or Pavlov's Dog but what if you can insert a step into the 'Stimulus-Response' reaction. There are lots of meditations that can teach you how you can choose to respond to such stimulus, and adding time before you respond. But the real benefit is just to let go. Dont let your self-worth be governed by external forces - true happiness can only come from with it and that fountain is endless.

The down side (imho) is the detachment from reality. The common joke in marketing is that there is no point selling to a buddhist they never have any money. You need money to fix the hole in the roof, pre-lotus sutra tells us that there is not hole in the roof. Post-lotus sutra tells us that that we could chant for it to be fixed (or if we pray hard enough the hole would go away), the latter teaching say that we take action.

Post-lotus sutra

The key feature of Post-lotus sutra is to Take Action - to get off you butt and do something. This take the view much like in The Secret or Abundance thinking, that you are the Script Writer of your own life. The snag with The Secret is that willing the hole to be fixed by its self is equally problematic. The lotus sutra is one for getting your hands dirty in the messy mud of life (the lotus flower stands all and blooms from the mucky earth). Which means there is no detachment from reality but as an empowered person you can tackle every challenge you face head on. This is important due to our mission of world wide Kosen-Rufu you cant take the challenge/vow on are a helpless person.

There are some 2,640 billionaires in the world
Buddhism to teaches us that if someone then gave you a billion dollars and you spent $1,000 each day, you would be spending for about 2,740 years before you went broke; or to put it another way the average American household spends about $75000 per year. Using that, $1 billion would last over 13,333 years.
Even billionaires will die. Buddha said, “All conditioned things are impermanent' — when one sees this with wisdom, one turns away from suffering”

Impermanence in Buddhism

Impermanence, also known as the philosophical problem of change, is a philosophical concept addressed in a variety of religions and philosophies. In Eastern philosophy it is notable for its role in the Buddhist three marks of existence.
In SGI buddhism there is a desire to refer to the 3 Founding Presidents as Eternal by some member, other dilute this by saying "they will always be remembered as our mentors".

Impermanence is reflected in the noble truths; They are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering. More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end. This buddha shakyamuni observed with a leaf falling from a tree. Or to put it another way we are born,we grow old, we get sick and we die. The Four Noble Truths are the foundational tenets of Buddhism, which spark awareness of suffering as the nature of existence, its cause, and how to live without it. The truths are understood as the realization which led to the enlightenment of the Buddha (l. c. 563 - c. 483 BCE) and were the basis of his teachings.

But buddhism is about this life, the existence, what is eternal and does it matter? For Christians its your Soul, for Buddhists its your Karma - but then what is your karma attached to. "Reincarnation" normally is understood to be the transmigration of a soul to another body after death - In Tibetan buddhism that in-between state lasts no more than 53days, and the holding pen for the soul is called 'Bardo'. See also Transmigration in Buddhism
In reality - we just dont know the life after death - Buddhism is about THIS life - live it like its the only one you got!
